🔬In a recent study conducted by Dr. Louis Flamand, a researcher at the ARThritis Centre, and Dr. Jianis Rigoussis from McGill University, researchers examined the evolution of the beta and delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 🦠
Using a murine model expressing the human ACE2 receptor, a protein present on human cells that the virus uses to enter and infect cells, these variants were passed through mice up to twenty times. 💉 Late-passage strains of the beta and delta variants showed severe disease, including antibody and interferon resistance for the delta variant. These researchers also identified several viral mutations occurring throughout the twenty passages, demonstrating SARS-CoV-2's ability to evolve rapidly. 🚨
🔎 SARS-CoV-2 poses increased risks for individuals with autoimmune diseases due to their weakened immune responses against viruses. On the other hand, vaccines may offer less protection in this vulnerable population. 📉 The ongoing evolution of the virus could worsen challenges for these patients, highlighting the need to specifically protect this population.
