Dr. Steve Lacroix’s team studies IL-1 cytokines and discovered that, beyond their inflammatory function, these cytokines can directly influence sensory neurons involved in pain perception, known as nociceptors. These interactions can induce pain in chronic inflammatory autoimmune diseases by binding to the IL-1 receptor type 1 (IL-1R1). The main goal of this research is to identify the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in these responses and to use this knowledge to alleviate pain after nerve injury.
